Our Philosophy in teaching and learning.
Our primary school years provide our students with a tailored education thanks to small classes. Following this, they are fully prepared to cope with the demands of secondary school education. Teachers at the Verbier International School rely on up-to-date teaching practices and are well resourced to help children develop to their full potential. We are fortunate to benefit from an international teaching staff who are highly motivated and bring with them a broad spectrum of teaching experience.
We provide a broad, balanced and creative curriculum following the English National Curriculum.
We pursue excellence through building self-confidence, perseverance, and independence, giving children the skills they need to succeed.
We understand the importance of celebrating success, progress, and attainment every day in all areas of school life.
We promote a healthy and active lifestyle with a wide choice of sports and excursions.
We value and encourage curiosity and seek to develop a risk-taking learning culture
We cultivate and maintain good links with the Verbier community and plan many trips, visits, and visitors to enrich the learning of our pupils.
Above all, we foster a safe, happy environment, where everyone is valued and respected.
Passport to higher education
Located in our welcoming new building at the heart of town, the Verbier International School’s Secondary School offers a balanced, first-class education that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and open-mindedness to the cultures and beliefs of others.
While we follow the English National Curriculum, our excellent, diverse teaching team infuses the pupils’ learning experiences with an international approach and expertly prepares pupils for further studies in IGCSE.
The Verbier International School’s Secondary School offers studies in the following age groups:
11-12 years old: Year 7
12-13 years old: Year 8
13-14 years old: Year 9
14-15 years old: Year 10
15-16 years old: Year 11
All pupils in VIS Secondary School are instructed in our core subjects: Maths, English, the 3 Sciences, French, History, Geography, Art, Physical Education and our afterschool (CAS) programme.
Pupils at VIS follow an intensive French Language program and are assessed and placed according to their appropriate level upon arrival. Native French Speakers follow the Swiss PER (Programme d’Enseignement Romand – niveau cycle). These studies help to prepare the pupils if they choose to write entrance exams to either a local Collège or an Ecole Professionnelle. French Language Learners are taught the foundations of grammar, written communication, reading and comprehension, and oral expression, while also benefiting from a French-speaking environment in which to practice their spoken French on a daily basis.
The Verbier International School also welcomes English Language Learners, who receive an individually adapted program of intensive English study in grammar, written communication, reading comprehension and oral expression, while also being integrated in our core subjects. This programme leads to the Cambridge CAT, PET and First certificate.
VIS places an emphasis on sports, the arts and community outreach, thereby offering ample opportunities for pupils to participate in activities each term, including tennis, crossfit, climbing, golf, skating, swimming, choir, drama productions, eco club, gardening and techlabs – not to mention our intensive and renowned ski program between the months of January and April.
With our smaller class sizes and special attention to the particular needs of each individual, the Middle School at VIS develops the personality of each student and helps them to become principled, balanced and risk tasking global citizens.
Agents of Change Programme
Our students from ages 11+ have classes with Elaine France, Founder of Flow In Action (http://www.flowinaction.org/) to build key personal, people and thinking skills relevant for the 21st Century.
Through the Flow In Action – Agents of Change Programme, students connect to their unique strengths and creativity, as they explore real-world challenges linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. The programme is designed to build their understanding as global citizens, able to recognise needs within their local community and confident in using their creativity to find solutions.
Each term, students will take a key theme and through group project-work they will research, raise awareness and take action through activities and events. Their work will integrate inter-cultural understanding and sustainability to encourage greater community collaboration and protection of our mountain environment.
Through this Agents of Change Programme, our students develop their character and wellbeing as they become equipped with the leadership and life-skills to flourish and contribute positively to the world around. This approach links what they are learning in their academic subjects, to real-world problem-solving, to increase long-term academic success.
Students use innovation thinking tools and strategies, embedding resilience and grit so that they can adapt to challenges as they move forward in problem-solving; as well as developing their entrepreneurial mind-set, so essential for today’s rapidly changing world.
The programme also prepares students for CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) which is a self-directed element within the IB-Diploma.
